Kevin Art Verville Jr. was just 17 days old when he was abducted from his mother in a carefully orchestrated deception near Camp Pendleton, California.
A woman calling herself “Sheila” approached Kevin’s young parents at their off-base military housing complex, claiming to represent an organization called “HELP” that provided struggling military families with financial assistance, diapers, formula, and other support. She appeared credible enough that Kevin’s parents agreed to enroll in the supposed program.
On July 1, 1980, Sheila returned and drove Kevin’s mother, Angelina, and her newborn son toward what she claimed was the organization’s office. Instead, she took them to a rural area near Fallbrook in northern San Diego County. Sheila stopped near a house and asked Angelina to get out and knock on the door, claiming they were picking up another mother. The moment Angelina stepped away from the vehicle, Sheila sped away with 17-day-old Kevin still inside.
Kevin has never been found.
More than four decades later, investigators believe there is a strong possibility that Kevin is still alive and may have no idea that he was abducted as an infant or that Kevin Verville Jr. is his true identity. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has released an age-progressed image showing what Kevin may look like as an adult as renewed efforts continue to bring him home.
Someone may know Kevin today by another name. Someone may remember a woman who suddenly appeared with a newborn baby in the summer of 1980. After all these years, one memory—or one DNA connection—could finally give the Verville family the answer they have been waiting for.
